A Montana registered agent must be a qualified individual or authorized entity with a physical Montana registered office where process can be delivered. Agent and office information are public. A P.O. box alone is insufficient; the agent must remain available and current.
Montana agent changes: forms and fees
Montana Statement of Change of registered office, agent, or both is generally no charge under the current fee schedule. File online through https://biz.sosmt.gov/ and use the entity record. The replacement agent must qualify, consent, and maintain the Montana address.
Resignation, notice, and effective dates
Montana registered-agent resignation follows the statutory notice/effective-date process and the current change/resignation form; the schedule lists no charge for ordinary registered-agent changes. Resignation does not appoint a successor, so the entity must promptly name a qualified Montana agent.
Consequences of a missing agent or address
An entity without a qualified Montana registered agent can miss process, suffer default judgments, lose good standing, face involuntary dissolution or revocation, and incur late and reinstatement charges. Limited substitute service does not replace the continuing appointment duty.

Keep the accepted filing and confirm the agent or service address shown for the business. Arrange forwarding of legal notices during the change, and check which contact information will be public before supplying a home address.
